Long Beach is Trivia Town!

By John Grossi

You may not know what is happening - all over town, almost every day of the week. Many local pubs and restaurants host a trivia night, an opportunity for friends, families, co-workers, and couples to join forces, prove their knowledge, and maybe even win a prize.

I attended the Rasselbock Trivia Night this summer, and a better excuse for a midweek German pretzel and beer I could not name. We didn’t win but my group of friends came in a respectable 4th place, and had lots of fun putting our heads together to come up with answers. A warning to the winners that fateful night at Rasselbock… we will be back!

A Few Things to Know About Trivia Night

• Get there early! If trivia starts at 8pm, all members of your team should arrive by 7:30pm or earlier to ensure your spot and make certain no one misses the first question!

• Any size group is fine. Whether you are playing solo or brimming with a crowd of 10, you can enter a trivia competition… so long as you can all agree on a funny team name, that is.

• Expect about a 90-minute game. Questions are asked in a series of rounds, after each of which competing teams submit their answers. There is plenty of time for eating, drinking, and socializing throughout the course of this fun night.

• No cheating! Honor is everything at trivia. You are playing for honor and with honor. No looking up answers on your phone. Trivia is all about coming up with something off the top of your head!

Trivia is free but the hosting restaurant/bar certainly encourages your party to eat or at least drink during the game.

A Fun Idea

I left my trivia trial not only having enjoyed a ton of fun, but realizing there is something unique to this experience. It’s the perfect multi-generational activity. See—and I’m not trying to make excuses—but my group was at a bit of a disadvantage having only “millennial” pop culture knowledge. In my opinion, the perfect well-rounded team would have a representative from each generation, and the more diverse your interests the better!

Whatever team you can scrape together, get out there and play some trivia this year. Here are the many places around town you can walk-in and participate!
