Feeling the Sound: SOUNDBath Studio at Heartwell Park

By Margaret Gill

If you’re searching for ways to bring peace and tranquility into your life, look no further than Heartwell Park!

Many local wellness organizations have chosen Heartwell as the perfect spot to bring their practice into the outdoors. Not only is it a conveniently located piece of nature, but its name is also especially appropriate!

“Part of the reason I choose this park is because of the name: heart-well,” explains Erika Segura, a hypnotherapist and founder of The SOUNDBath STUDIO.

Every second Saturday of the month, Segura and her team lead an outdoor sound therapy session at the park. “It’s super amazing for anyone who wants a lift in their mindset.”

Segura and her instructors use a variety of instruments meant to mimic the meditative effect that occurs when we listen to the sounds of nature. Rain sticks, ocean drums, gongs, and crystal bowls all combine to create an immersive, full-body experience. According to Segura, the music she creates at her sound baths is meant to be felt, not heard. The vibrations of the instruments allow your mind to enter a meditative state, which lets you explore your thoughts without distraction.

“With sound you don’t have to say anything,” she explains. “You just lay there and contemplate your thoughts.”

Though Segura hosts small sessions at her studio location in Palos Verdes, she started hosting sound baths at Heartwell so her clients could share the experience with their friends and family. These events are meant to be a communal activity, where those participating can form connections and share their stories with each other.

“It feels amazing to play, but hearing the stories is what drives me,” Segura says. She is constantly moved by the experiences her clients have during their sound bath sessions. “Sometimes people are on the verge of making a major decision, and just by de-stressing, they find the answers they need. They come up to me and say, “This produced the space for me to decide. This literally changed my life.”
