Martin Luzanilla, a tow-truck driver by trade, found himself with little to no work when the pandemic hit. Unable to support his family and in real danger of failing to make rent, he bet his final savings on starting a new eatery: Hibachi without the “show.”

Hibachi dining is best known as an entertaining night out involving chefs who put on a show. As they grill meats, seafood, vegetables, noodles and fried rice, the chefs tell jokes and perform “party tricks,” such as throwing the meat high then catching it in a hat. Behind the (expensive) theatrics is a tasty Japanese cuisine.

Martin’s goal was to bring that cuisine to everyday people for a lower cost without all the theatrics. His “driveway business” soon turned into a storefront near Poly High School. Less than a year later, he expanded to his East Long Beach location at Palo Verde and Stearns.

The key to Martin’s success is top quality food at a fair price. The menu is based on surf and turf with seasoned rice and noodles. Think lean grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, lobster, and salmon served over rice and/or noodles.

While Mexihanas does a lot of takeout and lunch business, the East Long Beach location includes about 25 seats for casual dine-in. They also offer deliciously refreshing Aguas Frescas homemade each day by Martin’s daughter.
