LET’S GO SOMEPLACE FOR… FROZEN TREATS

Chase away those June gloom blues with these frozen delights. It’s always a good time to “treat yo’self.”

“Not Just An Ice Cream Shop…”

Bixby Knolls: 4141 Long Beach Blvd, 90807

Downtown LB: 222 E. Broadway Ave, 90802

Celebrating 10 years since opening their first store, Long Beach Creamery was born from backyard tastings and a Kickstarter fund! And as one of the finalists in our March Madness: Sweet Tooth edition, it’s one our favorites, too. The shops carry seven signature flavors, four vegan flavors (two rotate depending on fruit availability), and five rotating flavors that change each month, one of them voted in by customers! LB Creamery shared, “Two flavors are always challenging each other for most popular - Saltine Dream (caramel, crackers, and fudge) and Burnt Caramel.”

The ice cream flavors are innovative and adventurous. Owner Dina’s favorite flavor is Love Potion #9. Only available during Valentine's Day, it's a Cognac vanilla ice cream with a strawberry black pepper jam. A surprising new flavor is Charcolate. It started when they burnt the chocolate sauce for the Midnight Oolong. They sampled some in the ice cream base and it tasted like toasted chocolate marshmallow! My sister loves Grampa's Fave, a Tuscan cantaloupe based flavor that comes around during the summer.

During March Madness, they reminded us that they’re “not just an ice cream shop.” They also offer Take & Bake Cookie Dough, Buttercake (check back often for different fun flavors), Whoopie Pie Sandwiches and whatever else they feel like baking!

Frozen Bananas And Ice Cream Bars

5800 2nd St, 90803

Before strolling the Naples canals this summer, stop by the take-out counter and grab yourself a frozen banana or ice cream bar. Each is made-to-order! The bananas and ice cream bars are dipped in chocolate, then you choose your toppings (as many as you want): rainbow and chocolate sprinkles, oreo cookies, peanuts, or potato chips. The chocolate has a nice crackle and best of all, the bananas are fresh frozen meaning you won’t break your teeth biting into them!

Ice Cream Sandwiches

2948 Clark Ave, 90815

In the freezer case, you’ll find four varieties of vanilla ice cream sandwiches: chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter, and maui munchies. All cookies are baked fresh in-house and the maui munchies with whole macadamia nuts, butterscotch and coconut are SO good. And of course, they have their famous bundt cakes that have joined many celebrations in LB!

Boozy Mangoneada

1436 E. 7th St, 90813

Ruta 15 is known for their innovative ceviche (over 12 types on their menu), but you’ve got to try their adult mangoneadas and raspados. Offering mango drizzled with chamoy, coconut, nuez (pecan), and tamarindo, all of their syrups are made in-house. These shaved ice cocktails are beautifully presented with a shot of tequila or rum on the side. And with a little help from my friends, I tried them all!

Halo-Halo

1356 W. Willow St, 90810

Literally translated from Tagalog to mean “mix-mix,” Gemmae’s serves this popular Filipino shaved ice dessert with red bean paste, ube halaya (jam), nata de coco (coconut jelly), pandan gelatin, white beans, garbanzo beans, sugar palm tree fruit; drizzled with evaporated milk; and topped with ube (purple yam) ice cream and leche flan (baked custard). Served in a tall glass, mix everything all up and enjoy!

Froyo Bowls

Long Beach: 2125 N. Bellflower Blvd, 90815

Los Alamitos: 10533 Los Alamitos Blvd, 90720

How about a treat on the “healthier” side? Yago offers eight different froyo bowls, or you can build your own! With a base of non-fat yogurt and toppings including fresh fruits, honey, granola, peanut butter and more. They even have a version of halo-halo with ube and coconut (it’s local owner Paolo’s favorite!). And try their Yago Whip for a protein boost. It comes in 10 flavors, all made with fresh squeezed OJ, froyo, protein powder, and fruit.

Super Food Smoothies

1106 E Wardlow Rd, Long Beach, CA 90807

How about a treat on the healthier side? Organic, non-GMO, and seed oil free; made with fresh ingredients including frozen fruit, hemp milk (made in-house) and coconut water; plus super foods like green spirulina, moringa, and sea moss. These smoothies are delicious and not too sweet! The Bay Breeze, one of their best sellers, has flavors of mango and banana, sweetened by dates. It’s a tranquil shade of light turquoise ready to transport you to the tropics.

Dole Pineapple Soft Serve

4150 McGowen St, Unit 7, 90808

Dole soft serve just the way Mickey makes it! Served in a cup or as a float in pineapple juice. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the tiki drums and smell the jungle cruise water. Also, try the blended orange and lemon creamsicle slushie (using fresh squeezed orange juice and lemonade made in-house), or owner Thea’s favorite, the blended strawberry lemonade slushie. Note: Cassidy's Corner shops are operated by independent owners. The menus vary by location.

Raspados

1168 E. 7th St, 90813

You can find one in almost every neighborhood, the term “La Michoacana” is synonymous with an authentic Mexican ice cream shop. La Michoacana Premier is a frozen treat smorgasbord with 35+ ice cream flavors, 10 sorbets, 70+ paletas (popsicles), raspados (shaved ice), ice cream bars and more! My friend suggested I try a traditional raspado de nuez with walnut syrup and condensed milk. I was absolutely delighted! A little savory and sweet, it was like drinking baklava.

Frozen Custard at Seaside Creamery

Frozen Custard

1785 Palo Verde Ave, Unit H, 90815

In a small strip mall by CSULB, you’ll find a new creamery selling amazing frozen custard. Similar to ice cream, frozen custard has the addition of egg yolks resulting in a denser, creamy frozen treat. With 16 unique and seasonal flavors and several topping options, enjoy them in a freshly made waffle cone or four at a time with their Flight! At my last visit, our family favorites were Strawberry Shortcake (like a Good Humor but so much better) and Instigator (also owner Ismael’s favorite!) infused with CoffeeDrunk espresso for 48 hours and sweetened with maple syrup and brown sugar. It was inspired by the coffee drink with the same name.
