Canelo wasn’t just a cat, he was a part of the Millikan High School community. Our beloved, fluffy tabby cat sadly passed away on March 22, 2026, in a car accident in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. Canelo has been a part of Millikan since 2023, his presence always natural and unquestioned.  Owned by a nearby neighbor, Canelo would walk over to hang out with Millikan students each and every school day.

Assistant Principal Mrs. Moreland loved Canelo. “In our office, we were all big fans of his, and once they told me [about his passing], we all cried together. It became this massive outpouring of love and kindness and it was really incredible to witness,” states Moreland.

“It was very clear that he made people feel seen,” she adds, referring to student messages written to Canelo.

“Canelo’s Tree” on Snowden Avenue and East Belen Street was his favorite spot on campus. The tree was beautifully decorated with candles, framed photos, flowers and paper chains with sentimental messages from students and staff written to Canelo. Currently, there is a plaque created by Mrs. Moreland under the tree in his honor.

Many of my peers follow the @canelosightings Instagram account, created by senior Caitlin Chan in 2024, dedicated to sharing photos of Canelo around campus. “[Canelo] brought more than warmth and connection; he brought a sense of unity… sometimes, it’s as simple as a cat choosing to lie on your lap when you need it most,” says Chan.

Canelo’s owner, Esperanza Caballero, sent out an official eulogy to the school the week of his death. Millikan organized a celebration of life for Canelo at Millikan held on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

Our unofficial mascot brought so much joy and love to Millikan—we’ll never forget you Canelo!
