What’s in a name? Well, for California State University, Long Beach the question is more accurately – What is your name? Throughout the University’s 68-year history, it has had no less than five official names, one interim name and one name that only the athletics program uses. Sheesh. No wonder the campus is having a bit of an identity crisis. Let’s take a look at the history of the many names of that-state-college-in-Long-Beach.
1949: Los Angeles-Orange County State Colle
In 1986, somewhere between a Luau in Hawaii and the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, The Elm Street Band was born at the corner of Elm St. and Anaheim in Long Beach. They rocked a house party that night and the rest is history. Elm Street Band is one of the most well-known bands in our city and is basically a household name. We sat down at Avenue 3 Pizza & Subs (2226 Palo Verde, 90815) with Wilson and Long Beach State soccer alum Kristyn Benavidez. She gave us a rundown of her soccer career including the 2008 Moore League, CIF, State, and National champion Wilson Bruins. She also gave us her most memorable moments as a Long Beach State 49er. Benavidez “shot her shot” with this season’s LBSU women’s soccer team, which she says, “will reach the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history.”
